ISLAND OVERVIEW
Antiparos is a small island in the southern Aegean, at the heart of the Cyclades, which is less than one nautical mile (1.9 km) southwest of Paros. Antiparos is an almost flat island made of volcanic rock with beautiful, sandy beaches and short vegetation.
In the 15th century, a cave was discovered at the centre of the island with rare stalagmites and stalactites inside, it has the oldest stalagmite in Europe.
Chora, the capital of Antiparos, is located on the Northern side, it has a Venetian castle and a calm port. The western side is remote and doesn’t have any settlements. Since the 1970s and 1980s, Antiparos has become a popular holiday destination, particularly for nudists, attracted by the remote and sandy beaches.
The island’s economy is based on tourism, fishing and farming. It is known for its white houses, cobbled streets and the bougainvillaea flowers that thrive in the houses’ yards. It is a tourist resort in the summer for Greeks and European visitors.
The ferry runs from Paros to the port of Parikia on Antiparos.

During Byzantine times and down to the 13th century, information about the history of Antiparos is scarce. In 1207 Antiparos was seized by the Venetians. Then in 1537 Antiparos and the rest of the Cyclades fell to the Ottomans, apart from a period in 1770–74 when it was ruled by the Russians, who removed many of the magnificent stalactites from the cave to the Hermitage Museum in Russia. In 1832 it officially became part of the Greek state.
During World War II, the South Western tip of the island near the Agios George was used as a secret submarine base.
Antiparos is surrounded by many small uninhabited islands with great historical and archaeological interest.
