Chalki

ISLAND OVERVIEW

 

Chalki is located in the southeast Aegean Sea, only an hour away from Rhodes.

It is a mountainous island and one of the smallest in the Dodecanese. 

The main occupations on the island are tourism and fishing.  There is virtually no natural water supply, but in 2014 a desalination plant was installed and they are no longer dependant on the water boat from Rhodes.

Chalki was ruled by the Roman Empire from 27BC to 395 then the Byzantine empire, Arabs, Venice, Ottomans and Italians before being united with Greece in 1948

The island used to support a much larger population but following emigration in the mid-20th century it was almost completely abandoned. A large portion of the residents moved to Tarpon Springs, Florida.
