ISLAND OVERVIEW

 

Leros has three large bays, providing shelter from all angles, it is a pretty and quite unexplored island, yet has a lot to offer.

In the summer months the population doubles to around 15000.  The island is known for its imposing medieval castle of the Knights of Saint John possibly built on a Byzantine fortress.

It has a small domestic airport or an 8.5 hour ferry trip to Athens.

Leros generally followed the fate of the rest of the Dodacanese, but is notable for the The battle of Leros which lasted 52 days. On 15 November 1943 Leros had about 25.479 people on its territory!

The story of the famous novel “Guns of Navarone” is based on the Battle of Leros, and Leros island’s coastal artillery guns are among the largest naval artillery guns used during World War II.
