ISLAND OVERVIEW

Fournoi Korseon is a small archipelago that lies between Ikaria, Samos and Patmo. There are two small inhabited islands in the complex, the main island of Fournoi is 31 sq. km (12 sq.m) and Thymaina 10 square km (3.9 sq.m). The rest of the islands are rocky and uninhabited.

The locals have one of the largest fishing fleets in Greece and the region is an important habitat for seabirds.

Fourni

The landscape of Fourni is rocky, mountainous and surrounded by beaches and secluded bays. The capital of Fourni is built on the slopes of Korakas Mountain at an altitude of 514 meters and around a small port. The other smaller settlements are Kamari, Thimena, and Chrissomilia that come alive during the summer tourist season. Many of the inhabitants are fishermen, although during the summer season the population also caters for tourists, providing room rentals and food.

Fournoi (town) proper is the main ferry harbour, with ferries also landing on Thymaina.

Thymaina

Thymaina is a tiny island located just west of Fournoi Korseon. It has one small village and almost no tourist facilities. It is built at an altitude of 564 meters. It receives day tripper boats from Fourni and many fishing boats. Its name is said to be derived from the thyme that grows throughout the island.

The archipelago is famous for being a hub of the Ancient World. Archaeologists have found 58 shipwrecks dating from the 4th century BC to the 19th century just off the coast of Fournoi. The newly discovered ships rest in shallow waters and show signs of damage from fishing nets and plunderers. The archaeological team also found a cargo of amphoras that carried wine, oil, and other foods, and a load of terracotta lamps dating to the 2nd century AD.
