Ionian Islands

Population: 207,855 (2011)

REGION OVERVIEW

The Ionian Islands are a group of islands in the Ionian Sea off the West coast of Greece facing Sicily. There are 7 main islands that were heavily influenced by the 400 years of Venetian occupation. They were also the only part of Greece that was not part of the Ottoman Empire. The Italian language was often used during that time by the upper class and there are still traces of that influence within the language, music and cuisine.

Corfu has a large population and is the second largest island after Kefalonia. It is the most sophisticated of the Ionian islands and the old town of Corfu is a UNESCO World heritage site. Zakynthos is home to Greeks most famous beach “Navagio Bay” or Shipwreck Beach. Kefalonia has some famously beautiful beaches, plenty to see and do, and the port of Fiscardo, is considered one of Greece’s most picturesque villages. Ithaca is harder to get to and is definitely “off” the track.  It is the summer-home to low key super-wealthy connoisseurs, but not for those wanting fine dining outside the house, night-life and shopping! Kythira is quite far south closer to Crete and has its own airport.

The green islands have a hot Mediterranean climate, are not very windy and have a slightly shorter but wetter Summer season. The beaches are characterized by limestone rock formations, grottos, sand and smooth pebbles. Nature and scenery are the main attractions, as well as the picturesque ports and relaxed atmosphere.

Work in progress

A few couples were meeting on the island of Corfu in 2018 praying for the region but at this stage there is no vessel actively working in this area.

If you are interested in volunteering short or long term with us in this region, please get in touch, we would love to see how we can work together!
