ISLAND OVERVIEW

Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge. It is named due to the white rocks (Greek leukos=white) in the Lefkata cape. Its highest point is the mountain Stavrota, (1,158 metres) situated in the middle of the island. The island has abundant underground water storage, which is the principal reason why most of the island is lush with greenery. The high mountains that abound are the sources for many waterfalls that cascade through the mountainous terrain and finally ending up into the sea, like the Dimossari waterfall on the outskirts of Nydri.

The main town, also called Lefkada is where you can stock up with almost anything and has a few big supermarkets and a busy waterfront with a large marina.

To the south, the town of Nydri is set in a sheltered location with views across to Skorpios (formerly owned by Aristotle Onassis), Meganisi and other small islands. Another  20kms further south is the resort of Vasiliki, a meca for windsurfers, with predictable afternoon winds. The lighthouse at Cape Lefkada, the beautiful Faneromeni monastery and the Melissa gorge are all worth a visit, as well as many beautiful beaches and a Venetian castle.

The Aktion National Airport at Preveza, is about 25min drive North of Lefkada and there are regular ferries to all the islands to the south from Nydri.
